The first of these “new drugs” to be approved by the European Medicines Agency, Pfizer is to make erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment Viagra available in France as well as in the US. It has just one more option to be considered, but the first is to get it for free.
The decision is the first step in the fight against ED, which will cost up to €5.5bn (£4.5bn) and could bring the number of men with ED to 10,000, up from 3,000 in the US in 2011. The decision will be taken in April this year.

The UK company, which will be selling the generic version of Viagra for a few bucks, is hoping the availability of the drug in the US will help it sell cheaper.
“It is a very promising new drug and has been approved for sale in the UK by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).” said Pfizer, which had just announced plans to sell its own generic version of Viagra for £1.13m in the US.
The US company, which is developing and manufacturing the generic version of Viagra, said that while it expected Viagra to be available by its own on demand, it was “not yet in its full range of clinical applications”.
It is the first time a generic version of the drug has been approved in the US. Viagra has been on the market since 1998 and is now a major prescription drug in the US. It is estimated that in 2013, it had an estimated US sales of €1.2bn, with Viagra costing consumers around €1.3bn.
While the company has not announced a return to the patent system in the US, it has already started selling generic versions of the drug in the US from April this year, with the generic version costing consumers around €5.50 per tablet.
The company is also looking into making Viagra available on its own, but this could be a cheaper alternative to the drug that is currently being developed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer also announced that it had reached an agreement with Pfizer for Viagra to be sold as a generic version of its erectile dysfunction drug.
A spokesperson for Pfizer said that the company had “no intention” of making Viagra available on the US market, but “its commitment to the patient is a primary focus for the development of Viagra.”
The company’s chief executive, John Smith, said: “Today’s decision to launch Viagra in France is a good example of the company’s commitment to patient safety and to our customers’ needs. As we look to the future, we will continue to manufacture and sell Viagra to our European customers.
“We look forward to working with Pfizer to commercialise Viagra in the UK and beyond.
“As we are committed to patient safety and the right treatment for the patient, this decision will be taken under the guidance of our regulatory officers.”
